Technology for Justice

Every industry uses technology to help enhance efficiency of their business, this also includes the justice system, where AI and blockchain are used for transparency, accuracy, and accountability. Starting with using AI to check and prove evidence; including photos, hand writing, or forgery. There is also use to keep data collected evidence for lawsuits. If there are any changes or revision, those concerned can check and track in each single process which also helps with speed and accuracy for fair trials.

Many organizations are also taking part in developing chatbots, to advise victims where to find medical or institutional guidance.

Another interesting role is AI for language translation. A speech-to-text in the investigation process. It can solve translation problems for foreign clients with enhancing the speed of process and allowing them to reach the justice system. All this helps reduce cost for hiring interpreters. In other ways, if clients are unable to follow up to an appointment, they can search and read the testimony from an online system.

On convicted criminals, there are organizations intending to develop models which can predict the behavior of criminals by teaching models to interpret evidence from organizations such as the Department of Corrections, Juvenile Observation and Protection, and Department of Probation. Some models can predict the root cause of convicted criminals such as mental, educational, or family problems. All cases which were predicted by AI will be reported to the related organizations to solve the right case directly at the right time which can reduce the percentage of recidivists efficiently.

Can AI help in the criminal justice system? The courts in some countries have already developed algorithms which learn more than 1 million criminal cases through sentences and bail history which is very accurate. Therefore the predictions from AI are a trend to use for the justice system in the future.

I mentioned several used cases that are related to AI and blockchain. Just to add, there is also electronic equipment that is used to track, follow, and control the routing of temporarily released prisoners. This technology was used to lower overcrowded prisoners in jail and also to reduce the tasks of the prison staff.

Seems like technology plays an important role to help us in the justice process and to solve criminal cases. We must build the knowledge and understanding of technology to our prison staff and we shouldn’t give too much trust in technology. We should use information and prediction from technology to consider how to interpret cases together with the consideration of laws and social context which will be the best way to balance both technology and justice in the future.
